Our Mission
The Friends of Geneva Cliffs is a group of residents and local agencies who work together to make Geneva Cliffs Urban Wild a safe, clean and inviting "natural area" for neighbors to come and take a walk, have a picnic in our "open air" grassy area, and enjoy special community events. This is the only urban wild in our part of Dorchester. We raised funds to undertake a major restoration in 2008 and now the site has a walking trail, look out spots and new plantings. Come enjoy Geneva Cliffs to see what a special place it is for young and old alike and learn how urban wilds benefit the environment in the City. For more information, contact: gfcac@hotmail.com or 617-436-0289.
What is an Urban Wild?
Geneva Cliffs is one of 40 "urban wilds" owned by the Boston Conservation Commission. Urban Wilds are not parks, but are natural landscapes that tell us about the history and the geology of the City. Geneva Cliffs is wooded with lots of Roxbury pudding stone “outcrop.” In the past, there was a pond and at one time an active stone quarry used to help build the city. The trees provide shade that helps to cool City streets and to filter carbon emissions. The Cliffs are home to birds, wildlife and wildflowers and also native trees and shrubs. One also finds “invasive species,” which are trees and plants like Norway Maple and Japaneses knot weed that take over and crowd out older "native"species found here. This Urban Wild sits next to an acre of vacant land owned by NSTAR, which agreed to let the City and the community improve the site and use it as an extension of Geneva Cliffs for community activities.
